A short introduction to the 3D-Laboratory
in Copenhagen

The 3D-Laboratory (3D-Lab) is the Research and Development Laboratory for
3D Image  Analysis and Visualization. It is an independent center jointly sponsored by
the

Historical background

The 3D-Lab was founded in August 1996, following an initial 6-year existence as a
smaller unit initiated by Professor Sven Kreiborg at the Department of Pediatric
Dentistry and Clinical Genetics, School of Dentistry, University of Copenhagen. The
usefulness of 3D techniques in research related to treatment of children with
congenital craniofacial malformations was demonstrated. The following
transformation of the laboratory into a multi-disciplinary center opened up for
extension of the techniques into a broader range of medical and dental applications.

Scientific context and scope

The area of activities in the 3D-Laboratory spans the field of 3D Medical Imaging
which comprises 3D medical image Generation, Communication, Processing,
Analysis,Visualization and Interaction, but with main focus on the last four. The goal
is optimization of the process of extraction and presentation of the information
content in 3D medical image data, both through the development of general
techniques and by tayloring to specific narrow application areas. Extraction of
information is carried out in terms of development of methods for automated and
semi-automated segmentation, registration, analysis, and modelling of (multi-
modality) 3D and 4D data. Presentation  is carried out in terms of visualization in a
broad sense, ranging from static 3D images to dynamical statistical properties of
objects and interaction with the data.
